$5 Bill Currency Upgrade Information
In an effort to reduce counterfeiting, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing has been issuing new currencies at a faster rate than in the past. Here is what you need to know to upgrade your MEI bill validator for new currency releases.
MEI has developed recognition software for the new $5 bill entering circulation on March 13, 2008. Beginning January 15, all series 2000 products shipped by MEI will include the new software.
Upgrades to MEI series 2000 FlashPort® bill validators are done via the Bill Programming Module (BPM) or the BPM Lite (Flashbox). Series 2000 that are NOT FlashPort will require control board upgrades (Kit available) before they can be updated with the BPM or BPM Lite. BPMs and BPM Lites purchased after January 15 will also include the $5 upgrade software in them. Either the BPM or BPM Lite can be used for most upgrades. Customers that have the 9 pin, 24v version series 2000 will require the standard BPM.
We are targeting the end of January for the release of the programming tools to MEI Authorized Service Centers (ASCs) that will allow download of the upgrade software into the programming modules. Beginning in February, customers can take their previously purchased BPM or BPM Lite to an MEI ASC, and for a nominal fee, the ASC will download the new software. This will include unlimited downloads.

- VN2500 bill validators manufactured week 45 of 1999 and later
- AE2400 bill validators manufactured week 45 of 1999 and later
- All AE2600 & AE2800 bill validators
How to upgrade: BPM Lite or BPM Flash Programmable – Unlimited downloads
MEI series 2000 – non-Flash
- VN2500 bill validators manufactured week 44 of 1999 and earlier
- AE2400 bill validators manufactured week 44 of 1999 and earlier
How to upgrade: Requires a control board and Gen1 Upgrade Kit, available only through an MEI Authorized Service Center. After upgrade, the unit is Flash Programmable with the BPM or BPM Lite.
